Qatari Diar’s landmark achievements recognize the world’s largest district cooling network and longest chilled water storage tank, reinforcing Qatar’s leadership in sustainable urban development.
Doha: Qatari Diar has announced that Lusail City has secured two Guinness World Records, marking a major global achievement for Qatar’s infrastructure and sustainable development ambitions.
According to a company statement, Lusail City’s integrated district cooling system has been officially recognized as the world’s largest district cooling network, spanning 123.5 kilometres. The network links district cooling plants and energy transfer stations to buildings through a sophisticated pipeline system with diameters ranging from 100 mm to 1,600 mm. It is equipped with smart leak detection technology, distributed isolation valves, and service tunnels to enhance operational flexibility, simplify maintenance, and ensure uninterrupted service.
The second record recognizes the world’s longest chilled water storage tank, located at the Northern District Cooling Plant in Lusail City. Measuring 46.041 metres in height and 32 metres in diameter, the tank has a storage capacity of 12,000 refrigeration tons.
The company said the tank plays a vital role in improving energy efficiency by storing chilled water during periods of low demand and supplying it during peak consumption, reducing energy use by up to 14 percent.
Qatari Diar described the achievement as the result of its long-term vision for Lusail City, which has focused on creating an integrated smart city supported by world-class infrastructure that promotes sustainability, resilience, and future growth.
The company noted that its wholly owned subsidiary, Marafeq Qatar, has been instrumental in delivering this vision by developing and operating advanced utility systems in line with international standards, making Lusail’s district cooling system one of the world’s leading models for efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
Qatari Diar CEO Sheikh Hamad bin Talal Al-Thani said the two Guinness World Records represent a significant milestone for a national project built on the principle that advanced infrastructure is the foundation of sustainable development and quality of life.
He said the recognition reflects the success of the company’s long-term investment strategy in building future-ready cities and demonstrates the effective integration of urban planning with advanced infrastructure. He added that the achievement further strengthens Lusail City’s standing as a global model for smart and sustainable urban development while reaffirming Qatar’s ability to deliver world-class projects.
Marafeq Qatar CEO Eng. Ahmed Al Ammari described the recognition as a proud national achievement that reflects more than 15 years of planning, investment, and development. He said the awards highlight the efficiency of an integrated system designed and operated to the highest international standards, ensuring reliable and sustainable services.
He added that the milestone underscores Qatar’s continued progress in infrastructure development, showcases Lusail City’s advanced urban model, and demonstrates Qatari Diar’s vision and Marafeq Qatar’s expertise in delivering utility systems based on global best practices.
District cooling is regarded as one of the key pillars of sustainable urban development due to its ability to reduce electricity consumption, conserve resources, and lower environmental impact. Once fully completed, Lusail City’s district cooling system will comprise several major cooling plants with a combined production capacity of nearly 630,000 refrigeration tons, meeting the cooling needs of the entire city.
