Kuwait Reopens Airspace, Begins Phased Resumption of Flights After Two-Month Closure

Kuwait has reopened its airspace at Kuwait International Airport starting Thursday evening, marking the end of a nearly two-month suspension, according to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA). Flights will resume gradually under a phased plan.

The reopening follows a precautionary closure imposed on February 28 amid regional developments. Initial operations will begin Sunday with Terminals 4 and 5 serving selected destinations, with further expansion dependent on ongoing evaluations.

Sheikh Hamoud Mubarak Al Sabah, Chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority (Kuwait), said the move was coordinated with domestic and international authorities to ensure compliance with the highest safety and security standards. Full operations are expected to resume in due course.

Authorities confirmed that damage assessments were completed following what they described as an Iranian attack and actions by affiliated armed groups, with maintenance and repairs carried out to restore operational readiness.

The phased restart prioritizes key routes, with each stage subject to review before wider reopening. Sheikh Hamoud also praised the efforts of aviation personnel and government entities, and expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s support in facilitating Kuwaiti carriers, as well as coordination among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to maintain air traffic continuity during the crisis.
