Qatar Participates in Basel Convention Working Group Meeting on Hazardous Waste Management in Geneva

Ministry of Environment and Climate Change highlights Qatar’s commitment to global environmental cooperation, sustainable waste management and implementation of international environmental standards

Geneva: The State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), participated in the 15th meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The meeting brought together representatives of States Parties, international organizations and environmental experts to discuss key technical and strategic issues related to hazardous waste management. Discussions focused on the management of plastic and textile waste, proposed amendments to the Convention’s annexes, strengthening cooperation with relevant international organizations, reviewing the implementation of decisions adopted by the Conference of the Parties, and preparations for upcoming meetings.

Ahead of the working group meeting, a delegation from MECC’s Hazardous Chemicals and Waste Department participated in the Basel Convention’s Implementation and Compliance Committee, where Qatar serves as a member. The delegation contributed to discussions on enhancing implementation of the Convention’s provisions, supporting States Parties in meeting their obligations, and advancing international cooperation and capacity-building for the environmentally sound management of hazardous waste.

The Ministry reaffirmed that Qatar’s active participation in the Basel Convention reflects its strong commitment to supporting international efforts to protect the environment and public health while promoting the sustainable management of chemicals and hazardous waste. It emphasized that these efforts align with global environmental standards and best practices and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
